Time Management and Networking

APPLYING THE PARETO PRINCIPLE TO YOUR NETWORKING

Remember the old adage called the “80/20 rule”. Well that principle came from Vilfredo Pareto, a 19th century Italian social critic. He observed that 80% of the land and wealth in the country was concentrated in 20% of the population. Therefore, he surmised that 80% of the power and influence was concentrated in the 20% who were land owners and decision makers.

Today the Pareto Principle is still alive and well, I would give you this definition in reference to your networking.

Mastering Your Elevator Speech

Be ready when someone asks ‘so tell me about yourself’

It is a well documented fact that the impression we make on someone happens in the first 60 seconds of our encounter with them. The first 10 seconds we are judged by how we look, the next 20 seconds by our behavior, and the final 30 seconds by the words we speak. So in one minute flat, the other person judges our appearance, our conduct, and our language. Bam. That first impression is set. And you only get one chance to make a first impression, so make that minute count.

The Mindset of a Hiring Manager

What is the strategy of making a hiring decision in difficult financial times.

In the Denver Post business section screamed “Have we hit bottom?” Everyone is looking for signs of an economic recovery. Natalie Mullis, the chief economist with the Colorado Legislative Council said, “I don’t think we’ve hit bottom yet, although the free fall appears to be behind us. I still expect to see job losses continue through at least this summer and at slower rates through the rest of 2009. The average person in Colorado won’t really feel a recovery until sometime next year.” Pretty sobering news if you are unemployed or under employed. So are employers hiring? The answer is yes, many companies are hiring, but in a different way than before.
